Caribbean to Sweden
Feb 17 2009
I felt like Charles Darwin on his voyage to the new world ☺ Images that I know would be with me for life!
How should I start……the delightful accent , the houses painted in red , or maybe the description of the ostrich farm.
A blend of sincerity , seriousness and sunlight are the descriptive words that come to my mind. A mathematics teachers turned wwoofer offered to me a view of life that I had never glanced at before.
On arrival if felt very much safe and welcomed. Almost instantly I had an opportunity to ride at the back of a tractor, added to this first time experience was the amazing scenery. I felt like Charles Darwin on his voyage to the new world ☺ Images that I know would be with me for life. As the days went by I tried to adapt the melody or rythme of the Swedes, I believe I achieved this to some level of success.
As time continued I discovered how precise and skillful one had to be with organic crops. I became part of a team responsible for removing unwanted, mineral and energy consuming growth on various species of tomato plants, in addition on Wednesdays was the day assigned for packaging and delivery of tomatoes to various shops. I was happy with this job because it allowed me to see different places. Apart from these and other odd jobs my host granted me the opportunity to read during the afternoons, ride a bicycle and engage in enlightening discussions, and not forgetting the sharing of tasty and nutritious Swedish meals.
In concluding I would like to send a positive message about wwoof and the collective incentives taken by all stakeholders. I would like to say however to prospective wwoofers always leave home with an open mind, do not try to do things to impress just be yourself, give as much as you can in good deed and in help. Remember never limit yourself all work can be done help is always just a call away. If you’re a big and strong with a height of 6ft 6 inches there is room for you if you’re a scrawny guy like me , ☺ you may need to smile some more but there is certainly a learning experience awaiting you. To prospective host , wwoofers come from diverse backgrounds, some make mistakes, some learn at different rates, ensure that you’re just a call away, never take things forgranted both bad and good alike. Lets all play our part to make this world synonymous with harmony , and wwoof with longevity.
