Wenngarn is basically a small village community with 400 inhabitants outside Sigtuna – built around a fantastic baroque castle. In 21st century Wenngarn, precisely as in the Middle Ages, life revolves around the castle and around community. It is an open castle and park environment suited to the modern man’s way of living and being. At Wenngarn we welcome residents, business people and visitors who want to meet, develop or just top up their energy.
With openness, partnership and passion we are refining Wenngarn, transforming it into the pearl it can be – with worthwhile sights, a hotel, restaurants, business enterprise, bakery, brewery, preschool, accommodation and much more.
The park has many sites, one of them being an organic kitchen garden that is about 2 hectares. Here we have a lot of raspberries, autumn raspberries, gooseberries, hops, rhubarb, black berries, currants and strawberries, most of it is planted in the summer of 2014. The hop production is used in the local brewery and they also use the apples from the old orchard to press into juice.
The terraces on the back of the castle is originally from the 1600s. It is now planted with clipped forms of hornbeam and privet. Old fashioned white roses, white peonies, white cranesbill and over a thousand white Delphinium are decorating the edge of the terrace.
We have started an ornamental prunus collection and right now there are over 80 different kinds on the property. The inner court yard of the restaurant has an interesting plant selection with Magnolia, Cornus, Cladrastis to name a few. There we also have a smaller kitchen garden where we grow things like salads, beetroots, radishes, carrots and wild strawberries among others.
Another site is the beautiful 70m long perennial border, which is a colorful welcome when you walk up to the hotel.
An eccentric topiary garden of yew is a new addition in front of the castle.
After the new owner took over in October 2013 a great deal has happened in the park and with all the buildings in the area. We want to keep changing and do new things in the park and we work to provide the restaurants, bakery and brewery with properly grown organic vegetables, fruits and berries from our own production.
A regular day will start of in the orangery, the garden head quarters. Here we will discuss what we will be doing that day. If we are dividing into smaller groups everybody gets a say in what they would like to do, then we gather the tools we will need and go out to work.
Working hard next to others and seeing how things develop as we go, one plant at a time, is a very satisfying feeling. Living and working together means that you get very close to each other, and you make friends for life.
What you will learn here depends on you, how long you are able to stay with us and what needs to be done in the time that you're here.
ACCOMODATION AND WHAT TO DO HERE
You will be accommodated in the area and we will provide you with food.
Take part in the small community that is Wenngarn. There is a hotel and restaurant with a small bar on the premises in a building that used to be an alcoholic institution. Every once in a while there are different events that you can take part in and that brings people here.
Here at Wenngarn we have a bakery, pizzeria and our own brewery. The lovely castle has a café and you are welcome to walk around and explore the old building. You will also get free access to our gym and sauna.
TO DO IN THE AREA
The closest town, about 15 minutes by bike (that you are welcome to borrow), is Sigtuna which is the oldest city in Sweden. It has a very charming feel and nice cafés and restaurants and a few shops. Surrounding Wenngarn are other beautiful castles.
Stockholm is about an hour trip away and there you can do a lot of sightseeing, shopping and enjoy the nightlife.
At Wenngarn we have many different things to experience and learn. If you are someone with an interest for plants and history and want to get some dirt under your nails this is a great place for you to stay.
Come and work in a beautiful castle park, be part of this exciting project and help Wenngarn flourish!
