About

OVERVIEW

Emeraldine is not a farm as such, but a residential property in a southern Stockholm suburb, that has been transformed into an urban permaculture demonstration and learning center. Emeraldine Stockholm is 15 minutes by bus from the city.

The traditional Swedish wooden house on the site was built 1923 and is the oldest house in the neighborhood. The surrounding 1454 sqm property is being resculpted from grass lawn to food producing, soil bulding urban permaculture forest garden oasis and volunteers are invited to help realize the implementation of this permaculture vision.

SELECTED DESIGN DETAILS

Raised ground elevation in the northeast corner makes an earth sheltered underground greenhouse more feasible (still under excavation/construction). A system of ponds for rehydrating the landscape will facilitate gravity-driven circulation of harvested rainwater around the property from this highest point. One of the deep ponds will allow koi carp to overwinter outdoors, with the pond water circulated through a living biological filter that uses bathtubs in a stepped waterfall design.

Low swales and sheet mulched keyhole beds planted with a great variety of food producing and functional plants and shrubs trap and direct water while high hugelkultur perennial vegetable mounds, in addition to also trapping and directing water flow, create sheltered spaces for sensitive plants and increase planting space.

An herb spiral, a snail-eating muscovy duck flock, an espaliered fruit and nut tree orchard and walkway, a nut and fruit tree hedge with several main and understory canopy layers, tropical elements like bamboo grove and a bamboo hedge that is replacing a traditional Nordic fir hedge, a banana/palm mulch circle (with willows standing by as replacements in case the bananas don’t make it through the winter) - these are some of the traditional and more creative permaculture elements that are being implemented.

Indoor projects include a green living wall and an aquaponics system with floating waterplants and koi fish/fry in tanks.

Longer term, an ecohouse primarily of structurally insulated rammed earth, with greenhouse "wings" and an open space on the ground floor for meetings, workshops, dining and living space on the top (for wwoofers and other guests) is being designed with passive solar, natural ventilation, grey-water re-use elements, among other sustainability features.

PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS

There are three separate (and occupied) small households in the house - my minimal and downsized living space on the top floor has two rooms, including the living room, and until the second building is built, volunteers would have to use available space in these rooms, sharing space as necessary. Tenting is of course also a possibility. Each room has its own entrance to the bathroom. The kitchen is small and shared and it would be best if the volunteers leads the cooking since I am still experimenting with various ways to prepare food produced on the site and would not like to inflict my experiments on a volunteer!,

PLEASE NOTE:
Emeraldine is a work in progress, a permaculture site still being built up, in an urban residential neighborhood . In this building-up stage, capacity and stamina for physical labour is necessary in digging and moving earth and gravel for building ponds and access paths, hugelkultur beds, clearing brush. This kind of work requires motivation, the kind that comes with a serious commitment to sustainability and to helping to realize sustainable practice. If you are simply looking for a cheap way to travel and light work like a bit of weeding here and there, or otherwise looking to do as little as possible to get free room and board while exploring the Stockholm night life or starting a new romance, if you are more interested in spending time on social media, even during work hours, and are not really interested in permaculture or in actually growing your own food, Emeraldine is most likely not the best match for you.
