Welcome to Hallsta Mellankvarn

We are a German family living in Sweden since 1983. We are vegetarians, growing most of our own vegetables and fruit. One ha property med fruit, vegetables, herbs and medical herbs. We grow old sorts and save our own seeds.

We have some bee hives for our own honey and some chicken for own eggs.

From May until September we are mainly at the summer house. There is no electricity and no running water. Here you can try the simple way of life.

There are many different things to work with, so no day will be like the day before. You can learn a lot of different things when we are working with the plants, with firewood, picking berries and apples, fixing carpentry problems, looking for the bee hives, taking the honey and a lot more.

We are interested in medical herbs and how to use the wild plants for medicine and meals. In summer we are busy with a butterfly and dragonfly project which means that we often are out reporting the different species of insects we can find in the surroundings.

We have no TV. Hildegard is sensitive for electromagnetic fields and you cannot use a cell phone/mobile phone or a laptop in the house.

Silas (born 95) likes to help Hildegard with the butterfly and dragonfly project. We have a cat, called Smilla (born 03). There are 4 more children (born 80, 83, 86, 89) studying and living at their own places. In summer they often visit us and help us with different work.

We talk Swedish and German and a little English.

We welcome 1 - 2 wwoofers to help us 5 hours a day for one week or longer. You are welcome to stay one week (minimum stay) first and see if you like our place and if it works well. You are welcome to join us in outings and activities. The Wwoofers will eat with the family and help to prepare the meals.
Often the wwoofers have their own room (outside in another building) but sometimes you have to share it with another wwoofer. In that case female with female or male with male wwoofers.

Nonsmokers, no alcohol or other drugs. No cellphones or laptops.

Things to take with you: work clothes, work gloves, rain wear, bedlinen or sleeping bag.

We live in a wonderful area with lakes, forest, hills, caves, butterflies and birds.
We have no regular internet contact, so sometimes it takes some days until we can answer your email.
Wwoofers have the possibility for free internet contact at the local library three times a week.

You are welcome with your questions.
