Hornudden is a small farm located at the lake Mälaren where we - Mats and Karin - live and work together with our permanent staff Johan, Tord, Åsa and Anders. The workers on Hornudden are very mixed during the summer with both young and older people from the local area and volunteers from different parts of the world.
We have two tourist houses on the farm for rental all year-round and four greenhouses for cultivating tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, cucumber and pepper. We also have a farmshop with a café and a restaurant.
Tomatoes are our speciality and we have around 30 different varieties. We are also growing different herbs, cucumber and lettuce. We also cultivate some other crops in the field, for example raspberries, onions, saskartoon, different varieties of lettuce and zuccini. Everything we grow on the farm is controlled by KRAV, the Swedish organisation for control of organic farming. We sell our products to shops, restaurants and on markets. During August and September we sell at the Farmers Market in Mariefred and Uppsala.
In our farmshop we sell our own products and localy produced from other farms and in our farmrestaurant we are only serving localyproduced meals and breads from our restaurantkitchen:
Hornudden is located very centrally, 80 km from Stockholm, 70 km from Uppsala, 40 km from Vasteras and is served regularly by buses. The big cities offer a variety of activities but there are also good recreational opportunities at the farm. As it is adjacent to the lake, one can choose from a number of water activities, such as canoeing and fishing.
You are very welcome to us at Hornudden from February to November. The work varies a lot but mostly it will be in the greenhouses. We prefer that you stay for at least three weeks and we cannot receive smokers with respect to our farm’s environmental policy and our tomatoeplants.
You do not need any previous experience from growing vegetables as long as you are eager to learn new things and enjoy doing practical things. Where you will live depends on when you arrive; it might be in our house, another house or in one of the caravans.
We not only enjoy growing high quality vegetables but also enjoy eating fresh food straight from the land and the greenhouses. We mainly eat organic and vegetarian food, with some exceptions.
